Nepal starts supplying power to India at 19.2 rupees per unit
Kathmandu, June 2. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has started selling surplus electric power to India.
NEA executive director Kulman Ghising told reporters that Nepal’s current peak demand rises up to 1,643 megawatts in the morning and evening hours. Due to monsoon rains, the rivers have significantly increased, resulting in an increase in power production.
He further explained that the supply of electricity has surpassed the demand, and NEA has no infrastructure to store it. Therefore, instead of disposing of the excess power, the authority has started selling it to neighboring India.
The demand for electricity in India remains high throughout the summer.
Since Wednesday, NEA has been supplying India with power from the 24 MW Trishuli Hydropower Project and the 15 MW Devighat Project at a rate of INR 12 (NPR 19.20) per unit.
