Huge fire occurs at cargo depot in Bangladesh, 49 killed

Kathmandu, June 5. A massive fire engulfed a cargo depot in BM Inland Container Depot at Sitakunda on Saturday. The site is near the sea port of Chittagong in Bangladesh. The fire killed at least 49 people and injured around 100 others.

The fire that broke out in a container full of chemicals, could not be controlled until the second day. According to Brig. Gen. Main Uddin, director general of the Bangladesh fire service and civil defense, multiple explosions took place after the initial blast, spreading the fire. Further, nine firefighters have died as well.

Moreover, according to local media, the explosions shattered the windows of nearby buildings and were felt as far as 4 kilometers from the blast site.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conveyed shock upon the incident and ordered for medical treatment of the victims.
