17 year old innocent prisoner commited suicide in Rolpa Jail: Investigation report submitted to the home minister
Kathmandu, June 15. An inmate of Rolpa District Prison, Sundar Harijan on May 18 committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling of his room inside the prison.
Shortly after the tragic incident, the home ministry ordered a special committee to investigate the matter.
The committee coordinated by Ministry’s Joint Secretary Surya Sedhain conducted an on-site investigation for nearly a month.
Today, the committee submitted its report to the home minister.
According to the report, 17-year-old Harijan was sentenced to five years for a crime committed by another person, Bijay Bikram Shah. Moreover, instead of being sent to a juvenile correction center, Harijan was sent to prison.
The negligence of the prison administration was also found to have connected with the tragic death of a teenager. After reading the report, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand told reporters that legal action would be taken on the basis of the Prison Act and Regulations.
