Sagarmatha’s First Youngest Climber Shambu Tamang’s funeral with national honours

Kathmandu, July 11. 1973-World record holder (Youngest climber of Sagarmatha expedition), Shambu Tamang was laid to rest following Buddhist traditions on Monday, four days after his death on Thursday.

He was accorded with national honors during his last rites.

On behalf of the government, the Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Jivanram Shrestha covered Tamang’s body with the national flag.

Government officials, monks, nuns, and mountaineers gathered together and paid tribute to the mountaineering icon.

At the age of seventeen in 1973, Tamang scaled the world’s tallest Mount Everest, and listed himself as the “youngest climber” in the prestigious Guinness World Record Book.

16-year-old Temba Chiri Sherpa later broke Tamang’s record in 2001.
