Mikhail Gorbachev, last leader of Soviet Union dies at 91

Kathmandu, August 31. Mikhail Gorbachev, last leader of the Soviet Union has died aged 91 on Tuesday.

The Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow said, “Gorbachev died this evening after a serious and long illness”.

Gorbachev was the Soviet Union leader from 1985-1991. He set up arms reduction deals with the United States and partnerships with Western powers, which helped to end the Cold War.

US President Biden described Gorbachev as a “man of remarkable vision” who admitted when things needed to change. Further, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his “deepest condolences over Gorbachev’s death.

Gorbachev will be buried next to his wife Raisa in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery.
