China may have committed crimes against Uyghur Muslims: UN report
Kathmandu, September 1. The United Nations(UN) office of Human Rights has published a report that reveals that China may have committed crimes against humanity in the Xinjiang region. The report was published on Wednesday.
The report was published minutes before UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet was to resign and end her four-year term.
The UN report said, “The extent of arbitrary and discriminatory detention of members of Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim groups … may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.” Different rights groups have accused Beijing of suppressing the Uyghur Muslims, a minority in the Xinjiang region. Further, United States accused China of genocide.
Moreover, Bachelet asked China to release all those detained. The Uyghur Muslims are reportedly detained in Chinese “training centers.”
China has denied all the allegations. China’s UN Ambassador, Zhang Jun said, hours before the release of the report, “We haven’t seen this report yet, but we are completely opposed to such a report, we do not think it will produce any good to anyone.” He further added, “We all know so well that the so-called Xinjiang issue is a completely fabricated lie out of political motivations, and its purpose is definitely to undermine China’s stability and to obstruct China’s development.”
Bachelet set her eye on Xinjiang since the start of her term in 2018. No successor for her has been yet named by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
