Scholar finds U.S. history textbooks teach racism since 1832
Kathmandu, October 9. A report in Time magazine revealed that most US history textbooks have been focusing on experience of white Americans, negating experiences of Black Americans.
A scholar named Donald Yacovone from Harvard University analyzed 220 history textbooks from 1832 to the present day, and found that textbooks mostly focused on national politics. Furthermore, the report quotes the scholar revealing US history books “treated the introduction of African Americans in American society as a ‘problem’.”
Yacovone said, “The further you go into the 20th century, this almost Evangelical theme of ‘the problem of a Negro’ and how much he needed to be controlled because he was so inept and ignorant became the guiding theme of American history textbooks.”
The magazine published the report on Tuesday last week.
