Kathmandu, October 19. India’s main opposition party, Indian Congress has elected Mallikarjun Kharge as its new president on Wednesday. The Nehru-Gandhi family did not compete in the election. This is the first time in 24 years that a non-Gandhi president has been elected.
Further, Kharge, 80, hails from the southern state of Karnataka. He was backed by the party’s top leaders. His contender, Shashi Tharoor had joined the party in 2009.
Interim party president Sonia Gandhi and son Rahul Gandhi announced that they would not be taking part in the elections last month. Moreover, the step is said to be taken to change the party’s image as a family dynasty and to bounce back from defeats since Modi came into power.
According to local media, Kharge got 80% of the total votes. Additionally, he is believed to be favorite of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
