Kathmandu, October 21. Sri Lanka’s parliament on Friday decided to reduce the powers of the president through constitutional amendment.
Sri Lanka has been struggling to pay for its fuel, food, medicine and other items after the country faced its worst economic turmoil since independence. After increased protests, former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned a month after protests increased. Moreover, protestors stormed his residence and vandalized the premises.
While Sri Lanka signed a deal of loan with IMF in September, Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe is confident the amendment will bring system change and rebuild the economy.
Further, the amendment was passed with the required two-third majority. Opposition leaders and civil society representatives have slammed the amendment, revealing the decision is not far-sighted.
