New Zealand passes law to ban tobacco consumption among youths
Kathmandu, December 14. New Zealand passed a law that bans smoking amongst youth. The law that was passed on Tuesday, states tobacco cannot be sold to anybody born on or after January 1, 2009.
Further, the minimum age for buying cigarettes will keep increasing by the newly passed law. In theory, somebody trying to buy a pack of cigarettes 50 years from now would need ID to show they were at least 63 years old.
While New Zealand aims to make the country smoke-free by 2025, health authorities predict smoking will fade away much early than expected.
According to the new law, the number of retailers allowed to sell tobacco is reduced to 600 from 6000. The amount of nicotine in tobacco is also called to decrease. Moreover, hefty taxes are imposed on cigarettes recently.
The law was welcomed by health agencies, but opposed by the libertarian ACT party.
