Kathmandu, January 8. The Taliban Government of Afghanistan’s Balkh province has announced that it has inaugurated a newly constructed irrigation water canal that would supply water to 8,000 hectares of land.

The 0.23 million US dollar (20 million afghanis) project was fully funded by United Nations Development Program (UNDP). “The canal will facilitate nearby farmers to increase agricultural production,” Government Official Mohammad Ibrahim told reporters.

Earlier in March 2022, UNDP had promised development funds of 50 million US dollars for economic programs in the war-struck country. “1.5 million US dollars will be specifically funded to help diversify the work of business women in northern Afghanistan,” UNDP administrator Achim Steiner announced in March.

A 285 km long mega water canal was inaugurated last year by the Taliban government’s acting deputy prime minister, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, to irrigate 550,000 hectares of land in the Balkh province.
