Supreme Court defers Election Commission’s decision to fine Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah

Kathmandu, February 15. Nepal’s Supreme Court on Wednesday issued an interim order deferring the enforcement of the Election Commission’s decision to fine Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah.

The interim order was issued by Constitutional Bench, including Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki, Justices Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, Anil Kumar Sinha, and Prakashman Singh Raut.

Following the local elections on May 13, the election commission ordered the candidates to submit information about their election expenditures. The commission imposed financial penalties on those who failed to submit their expenditures.

The commission also imposed a fine of Rs. 7,50,000 on Mayor Shah. Shah brought a case against the Commission before the Supreme Court.
