We will not replace our female workforce with men; UN Women calls for reversal of Taliban’s decision to ban Afghan women in the UN
Kathmandu, April 6. On Wednesday, United Nations(UN) Women’s Executive Director Sima Bahous condemned the Taliban’s decision to ban Afghan women from working with the UN in Afghanistan.
She stated that UN Women stands in solidarity with its female colleagues and all women who risk their lives daily to serve their country. “We salute their dedication, professionalism, and bravery,” Bahous noted.
Bahous called on the Taliban to revoke their decision and reverse all measures that restrict women’s and girls’ rights. “We will not replace our female workforce with men,” Bahous said.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN secretary-general’s deputy special representative for Afghanistan, said that all of the Afghan UN national staff, male and female, will report to the office together.
Afghanistan is currently in a humanitarian crisis, with 28.3 million people needing humanitarian assistance to survive, and the removal of skilled women aid workers decreases access to life-saving services.
The UN has around 3,900 staff in Afghanistan, with around 400 women nationals and 200 women internationals.
