Kathmandu, April 21. A recent survey has revealed that the population of snow leopards in Shey-Phoksundo National Park has reached 90.
Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, the Country Representative of WWF Nepal, said that the survey used a systematic camera trap method, which revealed a population density of 2.2 snow leopards per 100 sq km.
According to Dr. Maheshwar Dhakal, Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, the survey was conducted by the national park with support from WWF Nepal and involved the participation of local communities, scientists, young conservationists, and other stakeholders.
Snow leopards are a vulnerable species and are an indicator of healthy mountain ecosystems. However, they face threats from wildlife crime, retributive killing, and climate change impacts on their habitats.
