Karnali Province Declares Public Holiday on Saune Sankranti
Karnali, July 17: The Karnali Province Government has declared today as a public holiday across the entire province, marking the occasion of Saune Sankranti and Deuda Parba festival.
According to a notice issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law, all government offices and public corporations will remain closed today in observance of this special festival.
Ministry spokesperson Nidhi Raj Neupane confirmed that the decision to declare a public holiday was taken by the Karnali Province Government on April 12, 2023.
The cultural festivities of Saune Sankranti and Deuda Parba are being celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor in the districts of upper Karnali and Birendranagar today. Numerous programs have been organized to mark the occasion.
Saune Sankranti, observed on the 1st day of the month of Saun, is closely associated with the rituals of ‘ranko balne’ and ‘luto phalne’. The ‘ranko balne’ ritual involves lighting a symbolic ‘torch of fire’, while the ‘luto phalne’ ritual, which means ‘throwing away the scabies’, represents cleansing the body from disease and impurity.
Additionally, the festival features the traditional Deuda folk songs and dances, adding to the festive spirit of the celebration.
