Kathmandu, July 20: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced that it will suspend garbage collection until an agreement is reached with the local people in Nuwakot.
While speaking at the situation, Director of the environment section at KMC, Rabin Man Shrestha, informed that discussions were underway among the people’s representatives of concerned local levels, the Ministry of Urban Development, and other stakeholders. He noted, “The solid waste collection in KMC has been halted for three days already, and it is likely to continue for an additional four to five days.” He further added, “The local residents around the landfill site have been urging for their rehabilitation or a halt in garbage disposal activities.”
Moreover, Shrestha stated that due to additional demands from the locals, the garbage disposal process has faced hindrance.
On the other hand, KMC’s Spokesperson, Nabin Manandhar, emphasized the need for effective discussions to resolve the garbage disposal issues. “The locals have been obstructing the movement of garbage-carrying vehicles, citing the unbearable stench emanating from the landfill site,” Manandhar added.
Meanwhile, Ward No. 1 Chairman of Dhunibesi Municipality, Man Bahadur Tamang, asserted that they would continue their obstruction until the State addresses the demands of the local community. He underlined the necessity for the State to provide a definite timeline for resolving the issue.
