Kathmandu, July 23: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has clarified that there are no current plans to merge community schools within the city. At present, there are 89 community schools in KMC, comprising 59 secondary schools and 504 institutional schools. The KMC intends to uplift and improve these schools, as stated by Sitaram Koirala, Chief of Education Department at KMC.

Koirala emphasized that the primary objective is to increase student enrollment in schools with lower attendance, enhance school infrastructure, and provide necessary human and material resources to elevate the quality of education. While there has been a recent rise in interest towards community schools, Koirala observed that if students continue to enroll at the current rate, KMC may have to take direct responsibility for running these schools.

Previously, there were considerations for merging community schools with insufficient student numbers, but Koirala has ruled out the possibility of merger at the moment.

To beautify community schools in the city, KMC has allocated Rs 50 million, while the total budget allocated for the education sector in the current fiscal year surpasses Rs 1.3 billion.
