Kathmandu Police Register Alarming Number of Crimes in Recent Years

Kathmandu, July 25 : The graph of crimes in Kathmandu has been showing a consistent increase year by year, as indicated by the data.According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, there has been a significant surge in cases of banking fraud and other economic offences in recent times.

In the fiscal year 2077-78 BS (2020-21), a total of 5,662 crime cases were registered in Kathmandu. The number of registered cases rose to 8,977 in the following year and further escalated to 13,464 in the fiscal year 2022-23. Of particular concern, more than half of these cases, specifically 7,101, were related to banking fraud. Among the other recorded cases, 2,894 were related to abuse, 647 involved theft, 414 were associated with swindling, 368 were related to drug abuse and smuggling, 357 were linked to suicide incidents, and 326 concerned women and children.

Similarly, 189 cases were related to traffic accidents and injuries, 27 cases were about murder, and 1,141 cases pertained to other forms of offences.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Dan Bahadur Karki, highlighted that the data reflects the escalating trend of banking fraud and other economic offences in Kathmandu recently. This includes various forms of banking fraud, such as bounced checks, swindling through lottery scams, and deceptive promises of lucrative employment opportunities abroad.
