Monitoring Teams Deployed for Successful Implementation of Plastic Ban in KMC
Kathmandu, July 29: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is set to carry out rigorous monitoring to ensure the success of its campaign prohibiting the use of plastic bags below 40 microns.
While speaking at the launch event, Chief of KMC Environment Department, Rabin Man Shrestha, revealed that five joint teams comprising members from the KMC Environment Department and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police Force would be tasked with monitoring the implementation of the ban.
Shrestha stated that the teams would use micrometers to check the weight of plastic bags, and appropriate action would be taken if bags and products below 40 microns are found in use. However, he emphasized that items like flowers, garlands, and other decorative products made from plastic would also be prohibited.
The decision to implement the campaign came as the KMC faced challenges in managing garbage at the landfill site due to polythene usage. According to the Department, out of the total waste produced in the city, 75.5% is biodegradable, and 24.5% is non-biodegradable. Within the non-biodegradable waste, plastic products accounted for 6.5%.
