Medical Milestone: UK Performs First Womb Transplant, Offering Hope to Fertility Challenges
Kathmandu, Aug 24: Surgeons at Oxford have achieved a significant milestone by performing the first womb transplant in the UK. The surgery involved a 34-year-old woman who was born without a functional womb. Her 40-year-old sister, who wished to stay anonymous, generously donated her womb for the transplant. The operation took around 17 hours and was carried out by a team of about 20 medical experts in February.
Both the recipient and the donor recovered well after the surgery. The younger sister, along with her husband, has embryos stored and is hoping to have a baby soon. This achievement brings hope to many women facing fertility challenges due to conditions like absent or underdeveloped wombs. The surgery, however, requires the patient to take medication to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted womb. This successful procedure has brought optimism to women who dream of experiencing pregnancy and motherhood despite such challenges.
