International Aid Rushes to Libya After Deadly Floods Leave Thousands in Need
Kathmandu, Sept 17: International help is coming to Libya after flooding caused a lot of damage in the city of Derna. The World Health Organization says that nearly 4,000 bodies have been found, and around 9,000 people are still missing. Aid, including medicine and supplies for surgeries, has arrived in Benghazi to help 250,000 people. They’ve also brought body bags for the deceased.
The floods happened because two dams burst after heavy rains from a strong storm, causing a lot of destruction. Aid organizations are worried about diseases spreading in these conditions and the difficulty of getting aid to those who need it.
Authorities in Libya are investigating why the dams broke and how the money for maintenance was used. They want to find out if mistakes were made.
The Red Cross and the World Health Organization say that it’s not common for bodies after natural disasters to spread diseases. They’re asking people not to bury the dead in mass graves.
The UN has asked for $71 million to help those in need in Libya and is calling for cooperation between the different parts of the country. Many people have lost their homes and loved ones, and there’s still a lot of work to do to help them.
Rescue teams are still looking for survivors and helping those affected by the flood. Many people have been left homeless, and the damage is extensive. There’s hope of finding more survivors, but the situation is challenging.
