Washington, Dec 17: In response to a surge in attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea, the United States is reportedly contemplating a direct military strike on Yemen’s Houthi rebels, as per information from the US-based Semaphore website.

Officials from the Biden administration have informed the news site that they are carefully evaluating the strategic implications of targeting the Houthi group. This decision is being weighed against concerns about potentially escalating tensions and triggering a broader conflict in the already volatile Middle East.

While the U.S. has frequently conducted strikes in Iraq and Syria in response to attacks on bases housing American personnel, the focus on Yemen represents a shift in strategy. U.S. Navy ships in the region have faced repeated attacks, with drones and missiles launched from Yemen, prompting a heightened response from Washington.

The officials reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to taking decisive action against any threats to American personnel. Recent attacks on Saturday underscored the urgency of addressing the security challenges posed by the Houthis in Yemen.

This development comes amid notable shipping companies, including MAC and CM, aligning with CGM Maersk and Hapag Lloyd in opting to reroute their vessels away from the Red Sea. The decision to reroute ships through alternative trade routes reflects growing concerns about the security of the arterial Red Sea trade route. As the situation unfolds, the potential for a direct U.S. military intervention in Yemen remains a significant point of global attention.
