New COVID-19 Variant Detected in Birganj, Two Individuals Test Positive
Pokhariya, Jan 11: The Health Desk at Birganj crossing identified two individuals infected with the new JN1 variant of the coronavirus during antigen testing. Lab technician Nisha Sah reported that one Nepali citizen and one Indian citizen, both having traveled from Kolkata by train, tested positive for COVID-19.
Over 100 people underwent antigen tests on Wednesday and Thursday at the border crossing’s health desk. The confirmed COVID-19 cases have prompted authorities to take preventive measures. The Nepali citizen is currently isolated in Narayani Hospital in Birgunj, while the Indian citizen was handed over to the Indian police.
Samples from both cases have been sent to the provincial health laboratory in Janakpur for gene sequencing to gain a better understanding of the new variant. Public health officials are actively screening 200 to 250 individuals, conducting 50 to 60 antigen tests daily at the health desk.
This development underscores the need for heightened vigilance and continued adherence to public health measures to prevent the spread of the virus and its variants. Stay informed through reliable news sources for the latest updates on the situation.
