Kathmandu, Jan 16: Israeli footballer Sagiv Jehezkel, who plays for Antalyaspor in Turkey, finds himself on trial and facing expulsion from the club after displaying an armband during a recent match that read, “100 days. 7/10,” marking the 100th day since the October 7 attack by Hamas.

Jehezkel’s gesture, captured on camera during goal celebrations, has led to accusations in Turkey that he is supporting hostage-takers. The Israeli footballer denies being “pro-war” but finds himself under investigation for “publicly spreading hatred and chaos.”

The armband incident has sparked tensions, with Turkey’s Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç stating that the investigation is prompted by an alleged act of “supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza.” In response, Israel has accused Turkey of adopting double standards.

Jehezkel, who was scheduled for a release hearing on Monday, was re-arrested before the hearing took place. His trial raises questions about the intersection of sports and politics, particularly amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The situation underscores the broader political backdrop, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vocalizing support for the Palestinians and criticizing Israeli actions in Gaza. Large rallies in Turkey expressing solidarity with the Palestinians have been a recurring phenomenon since the October 7 attack.

The outcome of Jehezkel’s trial and the subsequent actions by both Israel and Turkey will likely be closely monitored, as the incident highlights the complexities of navigating political sentiments within the realm of sports.
