Modern Machinery Challenges Bhaktapur’s Biscuit Jatra Rituals
Bhaktapur, Feb 7: In a significant departure from tradition, the age-old practice of dragging a 55-hand long lingo for the renowned Biscuit Jatra of Bhaktapur has encountered modern machinery, causing a stir in the community. The lingo, an essential component of the Jatra’s rituals, has historically been pulled manually from Sallaghari Forest to Yosinkhel in Bhelukhel, marking the culmination of the festival’s celebrations.
The Biscuit Jatra, a nine-day and eight-night event steeped in Tantric tradition, culminates with the raising of the 55-hand long yosindyo or lingo on the eve of the new year. Symbolizing Kashi Bhairavnath, the lingo is worshipped ritually, with the Ashta Matrika symbol pulled up by eight ropes. However, the traditional practice of manually dragging the lingo from Sallaghari Forest has been replaced by modern dozers and cranes, sparking debate and dissent among locals.
Critics argue that the intrusion of modern machinery disrupts the sanctity and authenticity of the ancient rituals associated with the Biscuit Jatra. Sampurna Joshi, a Sanskritist from Bhaktapur, condemns the use of dozers and cranes, citing the importance of preserving traditional cultural practices from the influence of modernity.
Similarly, Vijayprasad Dhaubhadel, a former president of Toumadhi Youth Club, expresses dismay at the irony of employing modern technology to replace age-old traditions. Khima Wali, head of Guthi Sansthan branch office, Suryavinayak, acknowledges the cost-saving benefits of using modern equipment but underscores the cultural significance of preserving manual rituals.
While the use of dozers and cranes may expedite the process of relocating the lingo, it risks diluting the cultural heritage and spiritual essence of the Biscuit Jatra. As Bhaktapur grapples with the clash between tradition and modernity, the community faces a profound challenge in navigating the delicate balance between preserving ancestral customs and embracing technological advancements.
