Hamas Delegation Leaves Ceasefire Negotiations in Cairo Without Agreement
Kathmandu, Mar 8: The Hamas delegation has departed from ceasefire negotiations in Cairo, Egypt, without reaching an agreement. The talks, aimed at brokering a ceasefire in Gaza, have hit a roadblock as both sides fail to find common ground.
Despite the setback, Hamas maintains that indirect discussions with Israel are ongoing, indicating a continued effort to find a resolution. Hamas had initially proposed a 40-day ceasefire to coincide with the beginning of the month of Ramadan.
However, Israel has yet to send its delegation to Cairo, adding further complexity to the negotiations. Israel has articulated its desire for a list of surviving Israeli hostages as part of any potential agreement.
Key sticking points in the negotiations include Hamas’ reluctance to accept Israel’s demands for the return of Palestinians displaced by the conflict and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza cities.
The toll of the conflict continues to mount, with Gaza’s Ministry of Health reporting over 30,000 casualties resulting from Israeli attacks. Additionally, Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 people.
As efforts to secure a ceasefire remain ongoing, the situation in Gaza remains tense, with both sides facing significant challenges in finding a mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict.
