Kathmandu, Mar 14: As tensions simmer between India and the Maldives on the diplomatic front, the first contingent of Indian soldiers has completed their mission in the Maldives and returned home. Prior to their departure, the Indian troops transitioned their responsibilities to a team of technical experts from India.

The withdrawal of Indian soldiers from the Maldives has garnered international attention, including reactions from China. Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed support for the Maldives’ decision and emphasized China’s backing for the maintenance of the Maldives’ territorial sovereignty.

In a tweet, Wang Wenbin stated, “China supports the steps taken by the Maldives to maintain its territorial sovereignty and promote free exchange and cooperation with other countries.” This statement came in response to inquiries about the return of the initial batch of Indian troops stationed in the Maldives.

The decision to withdraw Indian soldiers came after an order from Maldives President Mohammad Muizhu. The soldiers, who were involved in operating surveillance aircraft and helicopters across various islands, have concluded their duties in the Maldives.

Although there has been no official confirmation from either Maldivian or Indian authorities, reports from Maldivian media outlets indicate that around 25 Indian soldiers stationed in Addu town have left the Maldives before the March 10 deadline. The Maldivian National Security Force reportedly acknowledged the withdrawal of Indian troops, as stated by Maldivian news website Miharu.

The evolving situation underscores the complex dynamics in the region and the delicate diplomatic relationships that countries navigate in the Indian Ocean region.
