Tragedy in the Mediterranean: Dozens Dead in Migrant Boat Disaster
Kathmandu, Mar 15: At least 60 migrants lost their lives tragically as a rubber boat capsized during a perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe.
The distressing incident also saw the rescue of around 25 migrants from the ill-fated boat. They were saved by the “Ocean Viking” vessel operated by “SOS Mediterranean,” a humanitarian organization dedicated to providing aid to those in need.
According to survivors, all passengers embarked on the journey from Zawiya, located on Libya’s northern coast, last Friday. However, their voyage took a disastrous turn after three days when the boat’s engine malfunctioned, leaving it adrift in the vast sea without adequate supplies of food and water.
Among the deceased were women and tragically, at least one child, as reported by survivors grappling with the aftermath of the harrowing accident. The incident sheds light once again on the perilous conditions faced by migrants undertaking treacherous sea crossings in search of safer and better lives.
