Kathmandu, Sept 10: SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission, led by Elon Musk’s company, has officially begun. Four astronauts are set to perform a spacewalk 700 kilometers above Earth, marking the world’s first private spacewalk.

The launch, initially delayed by two hours due to bad weather, will take astronauts on a 5-day mission to an orbit that has not been visited by any astronaut in over 50 years.

Originally scheduled for August 27, the mission was postponed due to helium leaks and weather conditions. On the third day of the mission, astronauts Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis will spacewalk 700 kilometers above Earth, lasting 15-20 minutes, although the entire process will take around two hours.

During the mission, the Dragon capsule will attempt to reach altitudes not visited since the Apollo program. The two astronauts will wear SpaceX’s specially developed EVA suits for their spacewalk. Additionally, 36 research studies focusing on human health will be conducted, and SpaceX’s Starlink laser-based communications will be tested in space.
