Kathmandu, Sept 12: A former CIA officer, Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage activities in favor of China. The 71-year-old admitted to FBI agents that he had sold classified U.S. intelligence to China, leading to his arrest in August 2020.

Ma, a Hong Kong-born American citizen, worked for the CIA and later the FBI between 1982 and 1989. As part of a plea deal, he agreed to fully cooperate with authorities for the rest of his life, including answering questions from government agencies.

During his sentencing debate on Wednesday, U.S. government lawyers confirmed Ma’s cooperation with the investigation. Officials revealed that Ma, along with a relative who was also a CIA agent, conspired to pass sensitive information to Chinese intelligence officers from the Shanghai State Security Bureau. Video evidence from a meeting in Hong Kong showed Ma receiving $50,000 in cash for the confidential data.

In 2004, Ma joined the FBI while under suspicion. Prosecutors stated that the relative involved in the espionage plot was Ma’s deceased brother.
