Khotang, Sept 28: Continuous heavy rains over the past three days have triggered floods and landslides, sweeping away 27 houses in various parts of Khotang district, according to Shivkumar Karki, Coordinator and Chief District Officer of the District Disaster Management Committee.

Although no human casualties have been reported, two people have sustained injuries and eight livestock have been buried. Karki mentioned that security agencies have been mobilized to monitor the situation and assist displaced families. The affected residents have been moved to nearby schools and relatives’ homes for safety.

The disaster has also caused extensive infrastructure damage. The Foxingtar bridge at Sunkoshi, on the border of Khotang and Udaipur, has been washed away, cutting off transport links to the eastern Terai region. The motorized arch bridge connecting Khotang Rural Municipality and Udaipur’s Rautamai Rural Municipality has also been swept away, disrupting local transportation.

Additionally, landslides have blocked all major roads in the district, including the Diktel-Halesi and Diktel-Chakhewabhanjyang sections of the Madhyapahari Highway. The Sunkoshi river is experiencing its worst flooding in 40 years, putting residents around Dudhkoshi and Sunkoshi at high risk. Local authorities are coordinating efforts to provide relief to the affected families.
