Local Governments Prioritize Restoring Roads and Basic Services in Flood-Affected Areas
Kathmandu, Oct 5: In the wake of recent floods, local governments in the severely affected districts of Kavre and Sindhuli have focused on reopening blocked roads, repairing damaged water sources, and restoring disrupted electricity supply. Local officials emphasized the need to provide basic services and access to transportation as a top priority before the upcoming Dasain festival.
Roshi Village President Dinesh Lama stated that reopening the blocked roads connecting to the BP highway and rural areas is crucial to enable the transport of electricity transformers and fallen poles. He reported extensive damage to infrastructure, including a 10-bed hospital, concrete bridges, and suspension bridges, with 300 houses affected and 12 school buildings destroyed.
Sunkoshi Rural Municipality President Deepa Dahal (Bohra) highlighted the damage to agriculture, roads, and drinking water systems. The municipality suffered an estimated loss of 3.9 billion rupees. The floods have damaged 37 drinking water projects, making water supply a major concern.
Both municipalities are coordinating with the federal and state governments to expedite relief and reconstruction efforts. Local representatives have requested additional support for agricultural rehabilitation and basic utilities as the regions work to recover from the disaster before the major festival season.
