Hot Air Ballooning Boosts Adventure Tourism in Pokhara

Pokhara, Nov 23: Renowned for its natural beauty and adventure activities, Pokhara has become a hotspot for tourists seeking thrilling experiences. Among its various adventure sports, hot air ballooning has seen a growing attraction, particularly among tourists from SAARC countries, with 60% of the participants hailing from India, according to Vikram Bade, Chairman of Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd.

Hot air balloon rides in Pokhara offer breathtaking views of the Annapurna range, lush hills, and serene lakes. Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd., which has been operating commercially since 2018, currently offers flights with three balloons of varying capacities, accommodating five, eight, and 12 passengers.

To further promote adventure tourism, the company is organizing an International Balloon Festival from December 24 to January 1. The event will feature night glow shows, musical performances, balloon competitions, and participation from professional pilots from 20 countries.

Key Highlights:

  • Balloon Flights: Operated daily from Lauruk to Changkhapur, flights are conducted between sunrise and sunset, ensuring a safe and scenic journey.
  • Flight Costs: NPR 11,000 for Nepalese, $120 for SAARC tourists, and $150 for other international tourists, with insurance coverage of $20,000 included.
  • Tourism Impact: Pokhara Tourism Council Chairman Taranath Pahari emphasized the role of hot air ballooning in enriching Nepal’s adventure tourism, placing Pokhara prominently on the global tourism map.

The company ensures safety with rigorous inspections and operates under the Civil Aviation Authority’s guidelines, with balloons flying at altitudes of 6,000–7,000 feet. With over 2,400 tourists enjoying the flights last year, hot air ballooning has cemented itself as a major attraction in Pokhara, complementing its natural allure.

Balloon Nepal Pvt. Ltd. plans to expand offerings, aiming to draw more international tourists while bolstering the local economy through adventure tourism.
