Tokyo, Dec 17: Japan plans to make renewable energy its primary source of power by 2040, targeting a share of 40 to 50 percent in electricity generation, according to a new plan released by the Natural Resources and Energy Agency.

The share of renewable energy, including solar and wind, was 23 percent in 2023, with a target of 38 percent set for 2030. The plan will be reviewed by government experts before being submitted to the cabinet for approval.

The strategy highlights the importance of balancing energy supply and decarbonization while addressing geopolitical risks, such as the Ukraine war and Middle East instability.

Currently, coal, gas, and oil-fired plants supply about 70 percent of Japan’s electricity. The government aims to reduce this to 30 to 40 percent by 2040.

The plan also projects a 10 to 20 percent rise in total electricity generation, increasing from 985 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2023.
