US Expresses Concern Over Military Court Convictions in Pakistan
Kathmandu, Dec 24: The United States has raised concerns over the sentencing of 25 supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan by a military court.
A statement from the US State Department highlighted worries about the lack of judicial independence and transparency in the military court proceedings. It urged Pakistan to ensure fair trials under its constitution and adhere to due process.
“The United States is deeply concerned about the convictions of Pakistani citizens by military courts for participating in the protests on May 9, 2023,” the statement read.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller echoed this sentiment on Twitter, calling on Pakistani authorities to uphold the rights to fair trials and due process.
The military court recently sentenced individuals to prison terms ranging from 2 to 10 years for their alleged involvement in an attack on a military installation during protests last year. These demonstrations erupted following Imran Khan’s arrest in connection with a corruption case, leading to widespread damage to government and military properties.
