Kathmandu, Dec 30: A tragic accident in Ethiopia’s Sidama region claimed the lives of more than 71 people when a truck carrying passengers plunged into the Galana River while crossing a bridge on Sunday.

The regional communications office reported that those injured in the accident are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Ethiopia, despite its low per capita vehicle ownership, has a high rate of fatal traffic accidents. Contributing factors include poor road conditions, reckless driving, a flawed licensing system, and lax enforcement of safety regulations.
