Migrant Tragedy in Tunisia: 27 Dead, 83 Rescued After Boats Capsize
Tunisia, Jan 2: Two migrant boats capsized near the island of Kerkenna in central Tunisia, leaving 27 dead, including women and children, while 83 were rescued, according to civil protection officials in Sfax.
The passengers, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, were attempting to cross to Europe when the tragedy occurred. The Tunisian National Guard confirmed that search efforts are ongoing to locate additional missing individuals.
Tunisia, a key departure point for migrants heading to Europe, is a common route for perilous crossings to Italy, with the Italian island of Lampedusa just 150 kilometers away. These dangerous Mediterranean journeys often end in fatalities.
This incident follows similar tragedies, including a December 18 accident that claimed at least 20 lives off Sfax and another rescue operation on December 12 involving 27 migrants near Jebeniana.
The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES) estimates that 600 to 700 migrants have died or gone missing in Tunisian waters in 2024, with over 1,300 fatalities or disappearances recorded in 2023.
