Kathmandu, Jan 8: The United States has released 11 Yemeni detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, transferring them to Oman. This latest release reduces the number of prisoners at the controversial facility to 15.

None of the detainees released on Monday were found guilty of crimes during their imprisonment. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the treatment and conditions faced by detainees in Guantanamo Bay. Among those still held, six have not been formally charged, while one prisoner remains convicted in connection with the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Due to the ongoing civil war in Yemen, the released detainees cannot return to their home country. Oman, which has been recognized for successfully rehabilitating former detainees, has agreed to host them.

Opened in 2001 following the September 11 attacks, Guantanamo Bay has faced global criticism for its harsh detention practices, including reports of prisoner torture, and is often described as one of the world’s most controversial prisons.
