Kathmandu, Feb 9: A US federal judge has blocked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing the personal financial data of millions of Americans held by the Treasury Department.

U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmeyer issued a preliminary injunction on Saturday, ordering Musk and his team to immediately destroy any copies of the records. The decision comes after attorneys general from 19 states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, which had allowed Musk’s department to access Treasury records for cost-cutting measures.

The judge ruled that Musk, as a “special government employee,” and his department, which is not an official government agency, had no legal authority to access such sensitive financial data.

Following the ruling, Musk criticized the decision in a post on X, calling it “absolutely not wise.”
