Nepali Students Allowed to Return to Odisha College After Minister’s Intervention

Kathmandu, Feb 18: The Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryavanshi Suraj intervened after the forced eviction of Nepali students from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar following the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal.
After widespread protests and social media outrage, the college administration had initially evicted Nepali students and abandoned them at Cuttack railway station with police assistance. The administration had also issued a notice stating that the college was “closed” for Nepali students.
Following the minister’s intervention, the college requested the stranded students to return to the hostel. Odisha State Road Transport Corporation buses were arranged to transport the students back.
Minister Suryavanshi labeled the incident as “unfortunate” and confirmed the arrest of Advik Srivastava, a mechanical engineering student accused of harassment leading to Prakriti’s death. Srivastava will be presented in court.
The Odisha Home Department is investigating the issue, and discussions with the Indian External Affairs Ministry are ongoing to ensure the safety and well-being of the Nepali students. Minister Suryavanshi also warned of strict action against any harassment or intimidation.
