Kathmandu, Feb 18: Talks between the United States and Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine have started in Saudi Arabia, marking their first direct meeting since the Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

The meeting is attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mark Rubio, but no representatives from Ukraine or Europe were invited.

According to BBC correspondent Tom Bateman, both sides maintained silence before the talks began. The BBC asked Rubio if the US was bypassing Ukraine, but there was no response.

The US described the talks as a “first step” to gauge Russia’s willingness to end the war, while Russia expressed hope for normalizing relations with the US.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Ukraine would reject any agreement that excludes their involvement.

European leaders have also expressed interest in joining the discussions and have called an emergency meeting on Monday.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that he may consider sending British troops to Ukraine if a lasting peace deal is reached, though other countries have yet to show similar intentions.
