Kathmandu, Feb 21: Indian police have arrested five more employees of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha on charges of assaulting Nepali students. The arrests were made after CCTV footage showed the staff attacking students who were vacating their hostel on February 16.

According to police, the accused got angry and started shouting at the students for delaying their departure. The situation escalated, leading to physical assault. The arrested individuals have been placed in judicial custody for 14 days.

Earlier, six people, including three college directors, were arrested, but five were later released on bail. On February 19, college staff apologized for mistreating student demonstrators.

The protests erupted after the suicide of B.Tech third-year student Prakriti Lamsal on February 16. The incident led to growing tensions between the administration and Nepali students.

In a viral video, KIIT professor Manjusha Pandey claimed the institution provides free food and education to over 40,000 students, while another staff member, Jayanti Nath, compared the college’s expenses to the country’s budget.
