First US Charter Plane Arrives in Kathmandu with Deported Nepalis

Kathmandu, March 5: For the first time, a US charter plane has landed in Kathmandu carrying Nepalis who were living illegally in the United States. The Griffon Air flight transported 10 Nepali nationals who were deported under US immigration policies.
Previously, the US deported Nepalis via commercial flights, with 27 individuals being sent back in a similar manner. However, this marks the first instance of a dedicated chartered deportation flight.
Some of the deportees were expelled following orders from the US Immigration Court for illegal residence, while others were arrested for working without proper authorization. The deportations align with stricter immigration policies introduced during Donald Trump’s presidency. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had previously listed over 1,350 Nepalis for deportation.
According to US government records, around 9,000 Nepalis entered the US without visas during President Joe Biden’s tenure. Approximately one-third of them were detained by immigration authorities.
