Khotang, March 29: Twenty wards across 10 local levels in Khotang have been identified as high-risk zones for wildfires (Dadhelo), according to the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).

Among the most vulnerable areas are Diktel Rupakot, Majhuwagadhi Municipality, and multiple wards in Halesi Tuwachung Municipality, Rawabensi Rural Municipality, and Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality. Additionally, all wards of Khotehang Rural Municipality are classified as high-risk.

To mitigate risks, local authorities will launch awareness campaigns through media broadcasts, distribute firefighting tools like hand brushes, and collaborate with community forest groups. The district will also stockpile emergency equipment for disaster response, with support from police, the Armed Police Force, and the Nepal Army.

Despite last year’s destruction of 65 forests due to wildfires, no legal action has been taken against individuals responsible for fire outbreaks. Under Nepal’s Forest Act 2076, setting fire to national forests is punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of Rs. 60,000.

With the dry season already causing destruction, authorities urge immediate preventive measures to curb further damage.
