Xi Jinping Visits Southeast Asia to Boost Economic Ties, Amid US Tariff Tensions

Kathmandu, April 17: Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Malaysia as part of his Southeast Asia tour aimed at strengthening economic cooperation in the region. He is scheduled to visit Cambodia next.
President Xi had previously visited Vietnam, where multiple bilateral agreements were signed on Tuesday. His tour comes at a time when tariff tensions between the United States and Southeast Asian nations are on the rise.
The US currently imposes high tariffs on certain Southeast Asian countries. Notably, a large portion of the affected imports—51% from Vietnam and 49% from Cambodia—are now subject to these tariffs. However, the US has temporarily lifted the tariffs for 90 days.
As various governments attempt to negotiate trade terms with US President Donald Trump, China is urging more countries to stand together against US tariffs. In retaliation to Washington’s measures, China imposed a steep 125% tariff on American goods.
Reacting to President Xi’s diplomatic efforts, Trump claimed that talks between China and Vietnam are designed to harm US interests. His comments reflect growing unease in Washington over Beijing’s expanding influence in Southeast Asia.
