Kathmandu, May 26: The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) and the Nepal Samajwadi Party (NSP) led by Ganganarayan Shrestha have formally signed a unity agreement in Kathmandu on Monday, exchanging letters and signatures to mark their merger.

Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the two parties laid out a five-point plan outlining their guiding ideology, programs, strategy, and leadership structure.

Key decisions in the unity agreement include:

  1. Ideological Line: The unified party will follow Marxism-Leninism and Maoism as its guiding principles.
  2. Party Program: A Socialist Kanti program adapted to Nepal’s unique conditions will be pursued.
  3. Strategic Approach: All forms of political engagement—including street protests, parliamentary politics, and government participation—will be utilized as necessary. Strategic decisions will be based on intra-party dialogue and consensus.
  4. Internal Functioning: The party will uphold freedom of thought while maintaining organizational uniformity, allowing room for ideological debate until the general convention.
  5. Leadership Arrangement: Ganganarayan Shrestha will be appointed Central Secretary of the CPN-Maoist Centre. Other NSP leaders joining the merger will be assigned organizational roles with respect.

This agreement marks a step toward leftist consolidation in Nepal, with both parties aiming to push forward a socialist agenda rooted in Nepal’s context.
