US Appeals Court Temporarily Allows Trump’s Import Tariffs to Continue

Kathmandu, May 30: The US Federal Court of Appeals has issued a temporary stay on a lower court ruling that had blocked former President Donald Trump’s import tariff policy.
Earlier, the US Court of International Trade in Manhattan had declared that Trump’s tax imposition on imports from specific countries was illegal, stating that the president had overstepped constitutional limits. The court argued that only Congress has the authority to regulate trade under the US Constitution, and the president cannot use emergency laws to bypass this power for economic reasons.
In response, the Trump administration appealed the decision, warning that the ruling could disrupt ongoing international trade negotiations. “Foreign policy and economic matters are handled by the executive and legislative branches, not the judiciary,” the administration emphasized in its appeal.
With the appellate court’s interim order, the Trump administration is allowed to continue collecting import duties until the case is fully heard.
The next hearing is scheduled to take place in June.
