Public Transport to Halt in Protest of Gandaki Government’s Ride-Sharing Law

Kathmandu, June 1: Public transport services across the country will be suspended from Tuesday as transport operators stage a protest against the Gandaki Province Government’s decision to legally recognize ride-sharing services.
The provincial government recently issued rules permitting private vehicles to transport passengers under ride-sharing platforms, sparking backlash from traditional transport operators.
Major transport unions including the Central Federation of Public Transport, National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs of Nepal, Nepal Transport Workers Union, and others, organized protests in Pokhara and Kathmandu on Monday. They have postponed further protest programs temporarily but confirmed the suspension of services starting Tuesday.
The unions argue that legalizing private ride-sharing vehicles disrupts the public transport system and threatens the livelihoods of thousands of transport workers. They are demanding the immediate rollback of the new regulations.
