Canada Vows Retaliation After U.S. Slaps 35% Tariff on Canadian Goods

Washington, Jul 13: Tensions have escalated in global trade as U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, set to take effect from August. The move has drawn strong criticism from Canada and several other nations.
In response, Canada has warned it will retaliate. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly stated that the government would intensify its efforts in economic diplomacy to protect national interests. Speaking alongside Steffen Sejorn, Executive Vice President of the European Commission for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, Joly emphasized Canada’s commitment to domestic job creation and economic stability.
The United States’ latest trade measure is part of a broader policy shift. Last week, Trump sent formal notices to key trade partners—including South Korea, Japan, Brazil, and the European Union—announcing planned tariffs ranging from 20% to 50%.
Mexico, also affected by a 30% tariff, condemned the move, calling it “wrong and fruitless.” European nations have similarly voiced concern, warning that such policies could destabilize global trade and trigger further retaliatory measures.
With economic tensions on the rise, international observers fear that the continued escalation could lead to a prolonged trade conflict.
