Russia Claims Military Gains in Ukraine as Drone Warfare Intensifies

Kathmandu, July 19: Russia announced on Friday that its forces had struck Ukrainian military positions and gained control over multiple settlements, as the conflict between the two nations continues to escalate. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed attacks on Ukrainian military industrial sites, airports, drone storage and assembly points, using both air-launched weapons and attack drones.
The ministry reported that 10 settlements across the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions are now under Russian control. Additionally, it claimed that 1,387 Ukrainian drones had been shot down by Russian air defense forces over the past week.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged that the Pokrovsk and Donetsk regions are under intense Russian assault, with border areas like Sumy and Kharkiv also facing critical threats. He stated that Ukrainian forces are prepared to respond to any Russian advancements and will “eliminate any Russian sabotage teams” attempting to infiltrate Ukrainian territory.
The drone war intensified further on Friday night and early Saturday, as Russia reported a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Moscow and surrounding regions. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, between 6:15 PM and 11 PM Moscow time, 87 fixed-wing drones were intercepted, including five near Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that Russian air defenses shot down six more drones early Saturday morning that were flying toward the capital.
As drone warfare escalates and ground battles intensify in the eastern and northeastern regions of Ukraine, both sides continue to assert control while bracing for further offensives.
